Dishwasher Not Draining? How to Clear Standing Water & Test Pumps

Opening your dishwasher door to find a pool of murky, greasy water resting in the basin? Follow our diagnostic checklist from Santa Clara's top dishwasher repair technicians.

🧼 Quick DIY First Step:

Before pulling tools out, run your kitchen sink garbage disposal for 15 seconds. If your sink disposal has ground food backed up, the dishwasher drain line cannot push dirty wastewater past the shared sink branch drain.

Understanding the Dishwasher Drainage Cycle

During cycle transitions, an electric pump energizes to evacuate dirty water in under 90 seconds. If debris impedes flow, the control board aborts the cycle. This leaves stagnant water and triggers error codes like OE (LG), 5C (Samsung), or E24 (Bosch).

1. Clogged Cylindrical Fine-Mesh Filter & Sump Basin

Unlike older dishwashers that featured built-in macerator food grinder blades, 95% of modern dishwashers (Bosch, KitchenAid, Samsung, GE) utilize quiet manual-clean filter assemblies.

  • Twist the cylindrical micro-filter a quarter-turn counterclockwise and pull it straight up.
  • Inspect the fine stainless steel mesh. If it is coated with grease slime, calcium scale, lemon seeds, or broken glass shards, water cannot gravity-feed into the pump sump.
  • Scrub thoroughly under warm tap water with dish soap and a soft nylon brush.

2. Countertop Air Gap or High Loop Blockage

California plumbing codes require dishwasher drain lines to connect to a countertop air gap cylinder. Alternatively, lines must feature an elevated high loop secured beneath the counter.

Pop the decorative chrome cylinder cap off your sink deck air gap. You will see a plastic diverter. Accumulated sludge, grease, and bone fragments frequently jam the narrow internal channel. Clean it out using a bottle brush or dental pick, then run a test cycle.

3. The Garbage Disposal Knockout Plug

Did you recently install a new garbage disposal under your kitchen sink? Every new disposal comes from the factory with a plastic knockout plug sealing the dishwasher nipple. If your plumber or handyman connected the hose without punching out and retrieving that internal plug, the dishwasher has zero drainage outlet!

4. Jammed Drain Pump Impeller

Small foreign objects (toothpicks, olive pits, broken glass slivers, twist ties) frequently bypass the coarse filter and slide directly into the drain pump chamber.

  1. Bail out standing water from the tub with a cup and sponge.
  2. Remove the pump impeller cover plate (held by a Torx screw on many models).
  3. Carefully use needle-nose pliers to verify that the plastic impeller blades spin freely. If an object is wedged between the blade and housing, the pump will hum loudly and trip thermal protection without spinning.

5. Defective Drain Pump Motor or Check Valve

If the impeller spins freely and no blockages exist, the drain pump motor windings may have failed. Technicians test the pump terminals for electrical continuity (typically 15 to 45 ohms). Furthermore, a swollen or torn rubber flapper check valve can prevent backflow from discharging properly, causing dirty sink water to siphon back into the tub.
